The University of Windsor Faculty of Law might be moving into the downtown area if a deal that is proposed is finalized. The deal would involve the City of Windsor purchasing the Paul Martin Building for $1 from the federal government. While that might seem like an amazing deal for the university, some considerations still remain.
Moving the law school to the Paul Martin Building would require work. The City of Windsor notes that it still remains committed to the offer of $15 million to help with the move. That offer was initially made in December 2013. In addition, the Downtown Windsor Business Improvement Association has noted that the $50,000 donation initially offered to the university in the summer of 2013 is still on the table. On top of those funds, the federal government has said it would pay $6 million for facade repair by the summer of 2016.
University of Windsor President Alan Wilderman said that he is excited about the prospect of moving the school to the downtown building. He said the school would have to look into how the building could house necessary features.
Currently, 750 students, staff and faculty are involved in the university's law program. The influx of those people into the downtown area could provide a welcome boost to the downtown economy.
This situation shows how complex some real estate transactions might be. In all commercial real estate transactions, it is vital to understand the terms of the deal. Scrutinizing contracts and learning about how land use laws, zoning issues and other potential issues might affect the usage of the real estate must occur prior to signing any documents.
