New strategy coming to condominium disputes

Condominiums are fairly popular in Ontario, with around 1.3 million people living in condos. When disputes arise regarding these condos, the process can be long, complicated and expensive. That's something that new proposed legislation may be able to change, streamlining the process and making it cheaper for all involved.

The proposal would set up a Condominium Authority. It would handle more than just disputes, but those would be one of the main areas of focus. By being dedicated just to condos and nothing else, legal proceedings may even be able to take place outside of a courtroom. Disputes could be settled faster so that people can resolve conflicts about their housing and spend less money in the process.

The Authority would handle a whole range of disputes, starting with things as simple as noise complaints. It would also look at things like bylaw infractions -- all condos have their own sets of bylaws that residents have to follow -- or issues regarding financial documents and how hard it can be to get them from the board of directors.

On top of that, Ontario would also make a Condo Manager Licensing Authority. There are around 700,000 condos in Ontario, in 10,000 different developments, and those are all run by about 2,500 people. The Condo Manager Licensing Authority would regulate those managers, train them and make sure they have all of the proper licensing. As of now, licenses are not even required, so this would be a significant change.

Whether you are living in a condo or working as a manager, you definitely want to keep an eye on the changes this legislation is bringing about.
